Deadening Composite Chordophone Strings

Deadening the strings is achieved by laying your fretting hand across them with just enough pressure to stop them sounding as actual notes.

To deaden a string is then to prevent it from sounding any musical note when plucked, which is, as aforementioned, typically achieved by pressing down on the strings with one’s fretting hand just enough to have such an effect (Ashton 2005, 135).
