Three-Finger Composite Chordophone Plucking

From “Tutorial¨ in The Bass Handbook

[…] pluck using […] three fingers, leading from the ring finger first, as if tapping down on a desk.

This plucking technique is beneficial in cases wherein one wishes to use “two-hand tapping¨ on the given composite chordophone, as such tapping introduces new speed limits for even the two-finger plucking approach (Ashton 2005, 135).

In addition, instead of the ring finger first, some others may instead use the index finger first (Ibid):

From “Tutorial¨ in The Bass Handbook

Session and fretless ace Steve Bailey uses three fingers but leads from the index finger.

Some people use a primarily two-finger plucking technique, with this three-finger one as backup (Ibid):

From “Tutorial¨ in The Bass Handbook

Gary Willis created a three-finger technique, but only using two fingers at any one time; the finger not being used remains in situ to play when required or to dampen the strings.
